About cumbers house

A long memory. A steady hand.

A small school with a long memory and a steady hand. Every young person’s plan built from who they are, on the day, in the year they arrive, not from the label that arrived first.

Our story

Built for the young people the system keeps missing

The Greenhouse did not begin with a business plan. It began with a handful of young people who had run out of rooms that fit them, and a refusal, on our part, to accept that the answer was simply another referral, another waiting list, another shrug of a shoulder.

So we built, quietly, in the order the young people asked us to. An online platform when school had become impossible. A tutoring service when content alone was clearly not enough. And finally, a real provision, a place they could walk into, be known in, and be held accountable for, because a stage-not-age plan only works when somebody owns the whole week, not just the hour.

We stayed small on purpose. Around thirty young people at any one time, staffed at a ratio that makes every relationship a real one. We will not grow larger than we can hold well. That is not modesty, it is the entire point.

Our outlook

“We are not in a hurry. Real progress with the young people we serve rarely arrives in a straight line, and almost never on a deadline.”

What we stand for

Four things we won't compromise on

Much of what we do is flexible, by design. These four are not. They shape every decision, every timetable, every quiet conversation in the corridor.

Person-centred, from the very first meeting

Every plan starts with a full baseline, educational, social, emotional. No template plans, no shortcut assumptions, no borrowed timetables from the last young person who looked similar on paper.

Relationships before curriculum

aA young person will not learn from someone they do not trust. So we invest in the relationship first, patiently, unglamorously, and for as long as it takes.

Adapted delivery. Un-adapted ambition.

How we teach flexes to fit the learner. Where we are heading, real qualifications, real next steps, a real adult life, does not.

Evidence, not adjectives

0% NEET in our 2026 cohort. 100% remained in education, employment or training. We publish outcomes because a young person's future deserves numbers, not vibes.

Chapter 01 - October 2023

An online platform, and a stubborn question

We started with an online learning platform for young people who could not, for all sorts of reasons, attend school. It worked — up to a point. But it left a question we could not put down: was giving them the content, on its own, ever really going to be enough?

Chapter 02 - September 2024

Tutors, and the shape of a real week

So we built a tutoring service for the learners who needed structure alongside subject knowledge. Excellent tutors, careful pairing, real progress in the sessions. And still, in between them, the week fell apart. They needed a timetable, a routine, a plan pitched at their stage, not their age.

Chapter 03 - January 2025

A provision, and the accountability that comes with one

The only honest answer was to open somewhere they could actually attend, and to be accountable, as educators, not commentators, for their day-to-day development. It sounds corny written down. It is genuinely how HyFlex was born.

Chaper 04 - Today

Engagement, reintegration, qualifications

Our work with SEMH and complex-needs learners gave us the foundation: personalised plans, monitored and revised against real goals. Engagement and stability come first, the rest follows. Then reintegration, whether into group classes, mainstream, or college. Then qualifications, aligned to a sustainable next step.

The journey, so far

A school written, quietly, chapter by chapter

Cumbers House didn’t begin with a business plan or a grand opening. It began with a question that wouldn’t go away; what would a school look like if it were genuinely built around the young people who tend to be hardest to place, and easiest to overlook? The answer took shape slowly, in conversations with families, clinicians, social workers and the young people themselves.

What follows isn’t a timeline of growth, because growth has never been the point. It’s a sequence of quiet, considered decisions; about the building we chose, the people we hired, the promises we make and the ones we deliberately don’t. Each chapter is a small commitment that, taken together, add up to the school we are today.

What we stand for

Read our prospectus before you ask the awkward questions.

Our prospectus covers the bits most schools leave out; staffing ratios, clinical input, fee structure and how we approach the days that don’t go to plan.

Meet the team

Skilled. Caring. Unwilling to give up.

A small, deliberately chosen team of teachers, coaches, therapists and mentors, who know every young person by name and story, not by cohort or referral form.

Tara Jones

Headteacher

Sets the school’s trauma-informed, relationship-first tone, from baselining to outcomes.

Fiona Conde

Deputy Head

Runs the day-to-day of the education centre, pastoral lead, safeguarding lead, and first point of contact for families.

Jaspel Singh

Leadership & Strategy

Partnerships, admissions and the operational fit between HyFlex and each local authority.

For local authorities

Bespoke, EHCP-led placements for young people who need alternative provision. Referrals reviewed personally by our SLT. A costed plan agreed before day one. Termly evidence of engagement, re-engagement and outcomes, never a black box.

For families & carers

No forms first. We start with a conversation, about your young person, not their label, and only once we understand them do we start talking about timetables, transport and what a first week might actually look like.
